책의 앞머리글자를 따서 SICP라고 부르기도 하고, 마법사 책(Wizard Book)이라는 별명으로도 유명한 컴퓨터 과학 입문 교과서. 특정 언어의 문법을 가르치는 것이 아니라 프로그래밍이라는 지적활동의 근간을 이루는 원리를 정갈하게 설명하고 있다.

최근에 번역서도 나왔는데, 한 책을 여러 명이 번역하다보니 번역문에 일관성도 없고 번역 자체도 어색하다는 평을 듣고 있다. 게다가 컴퓨터 과학의 역사에서 빼놓을 수 없는 고전명저이기 때문에 원서로 읽는게 좋을 것 같아, 절판돼서 구하기도 어려운 책을 몇 달 간 수소문한 끝에 간신히 구했다.

또 한가지 감동적인 것은, 아래 주소에 가면 1986년에 저자가 HP 임직원을 대상으로 한 강의를 동영상으로 받아볼 수 있다는 사실이다.

1986년이면 우리나라에서는 MSX 같은 8비트컴퓨터가 나오기 시작한 시대 (나오기 전인가?) 인데, 동 시대에 저자들은 Procedure, Generic Operator, Functional Programming 에 대해 강의를 하고 있었고 HP 는 이들을 초청해서 임직원들을 교육하고 있었다.

어찌보면 다 알고 있는 내용이지만, 학생 입장에서 배웠던 것과 회사에서 온몸으로 체험한 지식은 분명히 다르기 때문에 이 책은 여전히 의미가 있다. 실무에서의 삽질을 경험한 뒤에 다시금 이런 기본서를 공부하는 것은 내게 또다른 자양분이 되기 때문이다.
